When the Union Cabinet implemented a New Education Policy back in July 2020, there was a series of discussions all around the nation about the drastic changes and the positive takeaways from the policy.
Every year, lakhs of students pass out as engineers in the nation from different disciplines.
According to data from Scalar- a platform by EdTech start-up InterviewBit, out of these freshers, only 3 percent were able to get high-quality tech jobs.
Due to this, a lot of students turn towards non-tech careers and jobs which do not pay well.
On the other hand, many organizations have reported that the engineers they recruit were not competent enough to do the desired task.
Students were unable to get the correct exposure they needed to work in industrial environments and apply their knowledge in real-life situations.
The AICTE, keeping a note of all these things, wanted to change this trend.
The AICTE introduced the semester internship policy where every engineering student would undergo four internships compared to just one in their final year of college.
This new policy is designed in a way that will benefit students at every important juncture of their engineering course.
According to this policy, students will undergo their first internship after their second semester for 3-4 weeks, which would be an inter/intra-institutional training activity.
This training could be in the form of soft skills, entrepreneurial, research training or competitions, workshops, conferences which would onboard students with the basics of their respective field of interest.
The second and third internships would be after the fourth and sixth semester for 4-6 weeks.
This policy will act as an enhancing agent in shaping how students perceive their education. They will be able to see the field of their study from a brand-new perspective which is deep and opens new doors of opportunities for them.
The policy will not only be beneficial for just students, but it would also be advantageous for educational institutes as well as industries.
It would firstly give students a practical experience of the theoretical aspects they have learnt in class. They would learn a variety of skills like communication, teamwork, management, and networking with people that would help them in all walks of life.
Students would also have a stronger resume and have higher chances of getting a better higher education opportunity. They would most importantly be able to decide if the industry and the profession is the best for them or not. And if they think that it is the best for them, they would be able to put in efforts to get hired by the industry.
Educational institutions would gain a lot from this policy. They would be able to build relations with organisations and industries for mutual interests. Also, these institutes can take feedback from industry to make changes to their curriculum which would eventually enhance the teaching- learning process.
The Industry would gain a lot of value by onboarding interns and having these programs set up.
This policy would help them achieve temporary projects in association with students. Students would bring a whole new perspective to the table that would assist industries to get over roadblocks. They would have a flexible and cost-effective workforce at their perusal to complete tasks and would be able to hire competent students who would know the work that is required to do. Eventually, this policy would garner a better reputation for the industry.
